The Old Hungarian script is an alphabetic, runiform script used to write the Hungarian language which is also in current use by a considerable community. Unicode support for the script was added in Unicode version 8.0. This website contains various resources and tools to support the usage of this script on the modern web.

Font

You can download and install the font locally that is used on this page from GitHub. After downloading the OldHungarian.zip file, extract it, and install the appropriate font for your machine.

The font contains all defined Unicode 8.0 glyphs in the U+10C80 - U+10CFF range, and some common contemporary ligatures, including dz (𐲇‍𐲯), dzs (𐲇‍𐲰), q (𐲓‍𐲮), w (𐲮‍𐲮), x (𐲓‍𐲥), and y (𐲒‍𐲐), and the non-standard representation of the numeral 500 (𐳻‍𐳾)

The font alsow contains two auxiliary glyphs related to Old Hungarian, the reversed comma U+2E41 (⹁), and the reversed quotation mark U+2E42 (⹂)

Web usage

If you want to include Old Hungarian scripts on your webpage, either download the font package, and use it locally using the CSS @font-face property. Alternatively include the following in your <header>:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="//oldhungarian.eu/stylesheets/oldhungarian.css" />

And afterwards use the 'Web_OldHungarian' font-family whenever needed.

Contemporary usage

Note that the Unicode proposal doesn't contain codepoints for some contemporary ligatures in the standard, as they are only ligatures of two or more characters. These characters can be accessed with the following compositions:

Fonts might support these ligatures when they are combined with a U+200D zero width joiner character. So for example on supporting fonts the following three codepoints might return the ligature for the W glyph: U+10CAE(V) + U+200D + U+10CAE(V)

The contemporary glyph for the number 500 (𐳻‍𐳾) is not part of the standard, and is not defined in the Unicode ligature suggestions as well. However this font supports it using the combination of U+10CFB(5) + U+200D + U+10CFE(100) Note that as this is not part of the standard other fonts might not support this, or support this ligature in a different ways.

The N4268 proposal of the Unicode standard also lists a number of other ligatures, but because their contemporary usage is low they are not yet supported in this font.
